Sources & method
How a status is decided
- On HP's Dynamic Security list means the model appears in HP's July 2021 "dynamic security enabled products list". That document is the only per-model list from HP we found.
- Firmware update can remove it / older units only come from HP support document c05308850, which names the series and, for some, the 1 December 2016 manufacture cut-off.
- Unverified is used for every other model. "Not on a 2021 list" is not evidence a printer is open.
- Cartridge numbers come from HP's June 2026 North America compatibility PDF, or from HP's series-level support page where the PDF lacks the exact model. They are not verified for other regions.
- The site build fails if any status has no linked source.
Known gaps and doubts
- HP's list is dated July 2021, is marked "HP Confidential", and is hosted by a reseller. We could not find a current public per-model list on hp.com.
- Models launched after mid-2021 cannot appear on it. HP's current FAQ says "HP standard" printers use dynamic security, so a missing model is not a clean bill of health.
- Firmware changes can alter behaviour at any time. HP's support document is general and not dated on the page; we have not tested any printer.
- Epson, Brother and Canon: only general statements, no per-model status. Cost per page is not shown, as we have no source with both page yield and price.
- Laser and large-format models appear only if they are on HP's list; laser models not on it are not covered in v1. HP's support document also names PageWide 300/400/500 printers for its firmware fix; they are not in HP's 2021 table and are not included yet.
What we do not publish
No firmware downgrades, chip resets, or instructions to defeat a printer's checks. We only list options the maker itself documents.
